Moving Out? What You Need To Know Before You Go

There are many reasons why you may be moving home soon. You may be a renter with a lease that has expired. Or maybe you are moving interstate for a new job? The list goes on. But there are also plenty of things you need to be aware of before you start the process of moving out. Here are some of the essentials you need to know before you go:

Deposits

If you are a tenant, chances are you paid the landlord a substantial deposit when you moved in. Over time, it’s easy to forget how much it was. Find your tenancy agreement. The details of the deposit, including your method of payment, should be there. Even if you own your property, you may have paid a local authority, housing trust, or building council a deposit. It’s important you send a letter to them stating your intention to move on. They will then need to return that deposit as you hand over the keys.

Packing

It can take weeks to clear out a house if you’re not organized. Start with all the things you don’t want to take with you. You need to dispose of them by selling them, gifting them, or recycling them. Next, start packing up the things you want to take with you, but you don’t need immediately. As you get closer to moving day, you can gradually pack up more and more things. Pack an overnight bag with your toiletries and a couple of outfits. Keep this case with you in case you need to move ahead of your belongings.

Removals

Hiring the right removalists for the job is essential if you want your belongings out of the house safely and on time. Pick a company that has experience in your kind of move. Make sure they understand just how much stuff is coming out of the house. The last thing you need is to find out you need a second van! If you have anything fragile or particularly valuable, be sure to declare it to the people handling your things.

New Property

If you are becoming a tenant at your new home, you need to make sure all the documents for your tenancy agreement are in place in time. This can take a couple of weeks to organize, so start early. You will also need to raise the deposit money. Sometimes this needs to be paid in advance of receiving the keys to the property. If you haven’t yet received your original deposit money back, it can be hard to raise that kind of cash. Be sure to read the tenancy agreement carefully so you fully understand your obligations in the new property.

Moving house is one of the most stressful things you can do. It is often best to take a few days off work to make sure everything runs smoothly. Be careful not to injure yourself lifting heavy furniture. It’s best to leave it to the professionals. Finally, if you have kids, try to find some ways to keep them entertained while you’re unpacking. Happy moving.
