There was a time in the past where people prized and valued their home appliances. They would have them for years and make sure to service and keep them in property working condition. Many of those habits have gone away but people are re discovering ways to protect and maintain their home appliances. They are doing this out of safety and money concerns. All types of appliances from dishwashers to ovens have things that can be done that will prolong their usefulness and also prevent leaks that can damage your house.
One of the best ways to care for home appliances is to do semi-monthly inspections. This can be done with a professional or just with your own eyes. When you are inspecting appliances you are looking to make sure cords are in good condition and do not have any signs or fraying or breaking. With water-based appliances you want to make sure all valves are tight and there are no signs of leakage. You want to make sure the area around the appliances shows no signs of water damage or saturation.
Washers & Dryers
A washing machine and Dryer sometimes needs extra attention and care since they have elements of both water and high heat. A washing machine also has a large amount of cords and connections that need to be checked. A good tip is to make sure the washing machine is at least three inches from the wall. Also with a dryer, the attachments need to be checked and the venting hose replaced every 2-3 years.
Refrigerators
One big area that many people neglect is changing water filters in the refrigerator. Refrigerator water filters are important devices that filter and protect the water that is used in your appliance. If the filter is not changed every six months or so, the dirty filter can cause calcium to build up and damage the whole unit. A dirty water filter can also lead to impure drinking water and ice that is full of grime and dirt.
Outdoor Appliances
When thinking of appliances many people only think of their indoor items, but there are many outdoor machines that also need to be cared and maintained. These include lawn mowers, weed eaters, and tractors. For example, you need to drain gas from lawn mower tanks if you are not going to use it for a long extended period of time. Gas sitting in a tank for weeks or months can severely damage the machine and will make it very hard to start. Weed eaters should be cleaned and store out side of the weather and rain.
These days people are finding all kinds of way to cut back on expenses and to make things last longer than a few years. Maintaining appliances are a great way to do both. Not only are you protecting your wallet, but you are also are protecting your house and family. Improper appliances can not only lead to broken machines but can also cause major damage from fires and flooding. Many house fires are the result of faulty and improper electric appliances.
