How To Live A More Sustainable Life

One of the most important things you’ll ever do is look after the planet we live on. The past few years have started to show the dramatic effect our behaviour has had on the deterioration of the earth, and it’s become more and more apparent that now is the time for a change.

Whether you’re new to sustainability or you’ve been practising it for years, here are 8 ways you can live a more sustainable life:

  • Use Fewer Products That Contain Plastic

Although a lot of essentials use plastic as part of their packaging, supermarkets have started to wise onto the fact that people want products that are much more sustainable. You may have to pay a little bit extra, but try searching for products that have non-plastic packaging. If you’re lucky, you may live local to a zero plastic supermarket – where you take your own storage containers and stock up on products by weight.

  • Don’t Use Carrier Bags

Carrier bags can’t be recycled and whilst they may seem as though they’re handy, there are lots of more sustainable options out there. Whether you use the stores ‘bag for life’ or purchase your own reusable bags – you’ll be doing your bit for the environment everytime you say no to a carrier.

  • Donate Unwanted Items To Charity

When we have lots of bits we no longer need the temptation is to throw them out or take them to the skip. Whilst this may seem as though it’s the best thing to do, they often end up in a landfill as they can’t be destroyed. If your items are in good working order, try donating them to a charity of women’s shelter.

  • Take Part In Meat Free Mondays

It has been proven that living a meat-free life is more sustainable for the environment, but if you don’t want to give (or can’t) give up meat completely, you can always take part in Meat-Free Mondays. This is the premise that people taking part don’t eat any meat throughout the day, slowly helping to reduce the demand for meat across the globe. You know what they say, every little helps!

  • Think About How You Can Make Your Home More Sustainable

Whilst you may not be able to have an entirely sustainable home like those at Sustainable 9 Modern Home Builder, there are lots of different things you can do to make your home more sustainable. Try buying energy saving light bulbs, recycling absolutely everything and reducing the amount of electricity you use for starters. For ideas, you can visit this website.

  • Buy Food Locally

If you have the option to buy food locally and it’s something you can afford, why not give it a try? Even if you just make the switch to buying local fruit and veg, you’ll be surprised at the difference it can make to the environment and your sustainability.
