Summer is a great season if you just want to enjoy your time with family and have fun outside. But the reality is that kids can also bring messes and floor stains. From ketchup to popsicles or ice cream, all of these are challenging stains that can be quite hard to remove on your own. Cleaning Summer Floor Stains

Ketchup

Oh, ketchup. So yummy, but so messy. It’s a super common stain that’s easy to treat.

1. If you encountered any ketchup carpet stains, first we recommend gently wiping off the sauce first. If it’s already dry, you can use a knife to scrape it.
2. Then spray carpet stain spray (or clothing stain spray works too) onto the stain, completely covering it. Let it saturate for a few minutes.
3. Use an older toothbrush to rub the detergent and reach the carpet/cloth fiber with it.
4. If it’s small enough to put in the washer that’s great (and a carpet steamer even better), but doing this beforehand will help make the cleaning process a lot easier.
5. If the stain is still being stubborn, try mixing 1 cup of ammonia with 4 cups of water and spray that, followed by the toothbrush. Like most stains, the quicker you tackle it, the better!

Crayons

Crayons are my daughter’s favorite right now. We are working on coloring only on paper, but if I turn my back for even a second, it’s everywhere! The worst? When it’s smooshed and smeared into the carpet. I quickly learned how to get crayon out of the carpet.

1. Scrape excess crayon out of the carpet with a knife.
2. Apply carpet stain cleaner and try to blot up as much as possible.
3. Make an ice pack and apply it to the stain, hardening the crayon back into a more solid form. Scrape any more you can get off.
4. Take a cleaning cloth and cover the crayon. Use an iron to heat the cloth, which should cause the crayon to melt to it. 
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to get as much up as possible.
6. Apply a store-bought dry cleaning solution to the stain.

Popsicles

Popsicles often have food coloring in them, making it the hardest part to clean. Time is of the essence here!

1. Make a solution of 1:1 hydrogen peroxide and water (half and half).
2. Saturate the stain with the mixture and let it soak for a few minutes. Try not to over-wet it.
3. Pour a little water over it and get out the cleaning brush or toothbrush to GENTLY rub the stain out (depending on how big the stain is).
4. Blot it with a clean towel to absorb the stain and repeat. If it’s a big stain, you can add more water each time you repeat, but try not to over-saturate it.

Fruit Juice

Fruit juice carpet stain removal can be tricky (but not impossible). 

1. Make a solution of 1 tbsp dish soap and 2 cups cold water.
2. Saturate the stain and let it soak a few minutes.
3. Blot it with a dry towel to absorb the stain.
4. If the stain is still there after a few rounds, repeat the steps but make a solution of 1 tbsp ammonia and 2 cups cold water.
