Directions to make DIY Hello Goodbye Doormat

  1. Measure your doormat. (mine was – and most are – 30×18 in)
  2. Draw a rectangle into silhouette and change the dimensions to match your measurements
  3. Make your design. I made 2 “Hello Goodbye” mats because I think they’re cute!
  4. Cut the design onto vinyl or thick cardstock. Neither stays in place well on the material of the mat, so you can use painter’s tape to hold it in place temporarily.
  5. Weed it backwards. This means weed out what you want to paint.
  6. Use outdoor paint and stencil brushes to paint your design on. Depending on the color and brand, you may want to do 2-3 coats. I hear some people use spray paint, but it is hard to be as precise and if your design is intricate, you may end up smearing it.
