Some Common Disorders In Children

As a parent, or as someone who is expecting a child, it’s really important that you are aware of the many issues that can occur when it comes to your child. One of the things to know as much about as possible is the many disorders that a child can be born with. Having a disorder is not a death sentence, and your child will likely still have every chance to live a full life, but nonetheless it’s important to know as much as you can about the disorders in question. Let’s take a look at some of the most common ones.

Reye’s Syndrome

This is a particularly common problem in children, and one that needs urgent medical care, otherwise it might lead to some serious health issues throughout the rest of their lives. Reye’s syndrome can appear very suddenly after an illness such as chickenpox, and it is one that parents will particularly want to watch out for. It can cause brain swelling and liver problems, but as long as it’s caught early there is a lot of hope for treatment, so that’s something to bear in mind.

Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy is actually a group of neurological disorders, all of which are known to directly affect the motor skills and developmental aspects of children. Roughly one in 345 children in the US have cerebral palsy, so it is a pretty common condition, and one that we are getting to understand better and better all the time. If your child has cerebral palsy of some kind or another, then you will certainly want to make sure that you get help finding support, but as long as you do that, there is a lot of hope here too, and your child can live a full and happy life.

ADHD

It can appear as though ADHD is getting more and more common, but in truth we are just getting better at recognizing and diagnosing it. This is now a very well-known disorder, but it is still one that has some stigma attached to it, as well as some considerable misunderstanding from many corners of the culture. If you think your child might have ADHD, then you’ll want to ensure that they get the help they need in order to be able to live with it easily. That is a really useful approach to take, and one that can help a lot.

OCD

Finally, there is obsessive compulsive disorder, which people of all ages can develop, and which is now understood to be a quite serious brain problem. A child with OCD will have repetitive ‘tics’ that they cannot help but perform, which could be pretty much anything at all, such as a bodily movement or shouting a swear word. All in all, it is quite a serious condition, but as with the other disorders here, it’s something that can be helped and improved over time, so make sure that you are just getting your kid the help they need when they need it.
