Scaffolding tubes are manufactured in varying lengths in order to customize the structure to fit the job for which it is needed. Couplers are used to hold the tubes together. These also vary in size and uses and is dependent on the intended use. Scaffolding tubes are available in three types: ledgers, standards and transoms. Ledgers are horizontally made and are normally between standards. They provide a lateral support to the structure. A standard tube is vertical and can be used to support the full structure. Transoms, on the other hand, are support tubes that are smaller and are run perpendicular to the ledgers.

They can be used for adding stability to a structure and make a surface on which platforms can be placed. Couplers are used to connect each type of scaffolding tubes to prevent additional movement or flexibility upon completion of the structure.

Couplers and tubes are modular in shape for the easy erection of the different dimensions of structures. Scaffolding tubes are normally made with aluminum or steel. The heavier ones, steel tubes, are also very strong. The tubes that are made from aluminum are much lighter in weight, but their capacity is as good as the steel ones.

In some cases, composite tubes, even though they can be expensive, are used, but not as often as the steel tubes. These tubes are able to be cut to match the required length and can be purchased at specific lengths. Approximately 48.3mm, they are cut according to the size and are manufactured to European Standards.

The width of a scaffolding tube is of standard size as well. The weight of the finished structure can be ascertained by the width and depth of the walls. In some cases, galvanized steel tubes are used. In this instance, zinc is used to coat them. This will prevent them from becoming rusty or exposing them to corrosion because of the elements of the weather. The aluminum tubes are not necessarily galvanized, because of the resistance that aluminum has over rust or corrosion.

Steel that is not galvanized is normally painted or treated by chemicals to avoid water damage. Steel can be bent out of shape when it is impacted, but will regain its shape very easily. Aluminum, however, is easily misshapen and will not necessarily regain its shape after it is impacted.
