Unique Facts About Stegosaurus

Among the late Jurassic period dinosaurs, Stegosaurus is one of the best known. Frequently, it may be seen in movies, video games, and television shows. Unfortunately, many details about these peaceful prehistoric giants are unknown to most people, despite the fact that they are well-known dinosaurs in pop culture.

Stegosaurus Had A Spiked Tail.

The fossilized stegosaurus tail was probably used to spear its predator. The spikes are made of bone and show remodeled tips. These bones were probably remodeled to make them blunt, but the bone still retained its sharp point. Stegosaurus had two brains, but researchers don’t know for sure. The tail was probably ornamental as well. The enlarged sacrum and spinal cord gave scientists the mistaken impression that Stegosaurus had two brains. However, the sacrum was likely used for glycogen storage.

It Had A Tiny Brain.

The Stegosaurus had unique anatomy that made it unique among dinosaurs. Although the majority of dinosaurs had small brains in contrast to their overall body size, Stegosaurus’s brain was very little. Informative websites like Dan Avidan dinosaur website mentioned that their brains can be compared with a modern dog’s brain. Even with its brain size Stegosaurus had the intelligence to thrive in the wilderness of late Jurassic North America.  Above all, its head is said to have been the smallest in dinosaur history.

It Had Pebbly Throat Armor.

The pebbly pieces of bone that covered the Stegosaurus’ throat were called “gular armor” because they protected the dinosaur from carnivores. This armor would have been especially useful in a battle if the Stegosaurus had to withstand a large amount of force.

It Walked On All Four Legs.

The name Stegosaurus comes from the fact that it walked on all four legs, despite its back legs being double-length.  The Stegosaurus probably reared onto its large hind legs to forage for vegetation. This behavior may have resulted in a herding animal. Scientists currently don’t know for sure whether the Stegosaurus walked on all four legs or not.

It Ate Leafy Plants.

The Stegosaurus is an herbivorous dinosaur that ate a variety of plant-based foods. First, the Stegosaurus ate plant material and rocks, which may have helped it digest the tough plant matter. The dinosaur’s small skull and sharp teeth allowed it to chew its food, and it then passed it through its large stomach, where it was digested by stones in the digestive tract called gastroliths.

It Had A Spiked Tail.

Stegosaurus was a massive walking dinosaur that had a unique spiked tail. In addition, the dinosaur had two pairs of bony spikes on its tail, which may have been ornamental. The stegosaurus’ spinal cord was larger than its brain, leading paleontologists to believe it had two brains. Ultimately, it is thought that the sacral cavity was used to store glycogen.

It Had Plates.

Some researchers have questioned whether or not Stegosaurus had plates. Some have speculated that plates were used to identify the species or show vigor during mating season. Others believe that the plates may have been used as a form of sex display to distinguish the males from the females. While the plates were probably a practical tool to communicate with the sex of another male, the debate about their sexiness is far from over.
