We all want our gardens to stand out from the rest and

finding the most stunning plants is not only rewarding but fun. Gardens need to

be able to provide colour all year round, even if it is just from the leaves in

the autumn when they change to those amazing hues of red. Using these plants to

make your garden an eye-catching and fascinating space will give pleasure to

you, your family and friends.

Mountain Ash

The Sorbus pseudovilmorinii, commonly known as the Mountain

Ash, is definitely among the top five of the most stunning plants you will find

for your garden. This impressive plant can grow to become a graceful tree but

can also be left as a shrub. Its exquisite fruit comes in a deep rose-red and

follows a profusion of frothy pink or white flowers. The leaves are fine and

intricate and vary in colour, adding further enhancement to a garden. The

Mountain Ash reaches heights of around 4 metres and it originated in Yunnan,

China.

Lily of the Valley Tree

The Lily of the Valley Tree, or Gaultheria mucronate, is

beautiful in the late spring and the start of summer as it bears bell-shaped

white or pink flowers and it continues to delight later on with amazing fruits

in shades varying from vivid purple to white. The leaves can be a light or

darker shade of green and in the winter they have beautiful bronze tints,

continuing to add varied tones to those winter days. The leaves are leathery in

texture. The Gaultheria mucronate is an evergreen shrub and grows to around 1 to

1.5 metres in height.

Pampas Grass

No garden is complete without the wonderful gracefulness

of the Cortaderia selloana, better known as Pampas Grass and native to South

Africa. These grasses are very elegant and add beauty to any garden as their

long silver plumes sway gracefully in the breeze. Their leaves are green and

sharp and contrast beautifully with the silver grey of the tussocks. They grow

in clumps and can be used as a focal point of any garden due to the fact they

can be planted as stand-alone features.

Crabapple Tree

The Malus hupehensis, commonly known as the Crabapple

Tree and originating from the Far East, offers all-year-round pleasure to the

enthusiastic gardener. In late spring it delights the senses with fragrant

flowers that emerge from the pink buds to produce a dazzling white spectacle.

The fruits are generally of a dark-red hue. This plant usually grows to a

height of 5 to 7 metres.

Harrington’s Pink

Finally there is the Aster novae-angliae, or Harrington’s

Pink, which is indigenous to New England in the north east of the United

States. In the late summer, when the majority of perennials have stopped

flowering, it produces an outburst of flowers for the duration of the autumn.

These plants attract butterflies, adding further beauty to your garden. The

Aster grows to around 130-150 centimetres in height and is a good choice if you

want a supply of beautiful cut flowers to enjoy in your home in the autumn.
