The Five Most Useless Kitchen Gadgets

The Five Most Useless Kitchen GadgetsEveryone has done it at some point. You were out shopping, you spotted an in-store demonstration which caught your eye and you found yourself snapping up this ‘once in a lifetime’ offer. You take it home, look around your beautiful kitchen and wonder where on Earth this new gadget is going to go, or indeed when you’ll ever use it. So, what are the most common impulse purchases people pick up to gather dust in their kitchens?

Twirling spaghetti fork

For those people lacking the dexterity to rotate a piece of cutlery, the twirling spaghetti fork can do all the hard work for you. Press a button and the fork head rotates independently from the handle, meaning you get a perfectly twirled mouthful of spaghetti. Potentially a good idea, but will you really buy one of these for each member of the family for spaghettithons?

Bread maker

So many people buy bread makers, enamoured with the promise of the smell of freshly baked bread every morning. It’s so easy! Of course I’ll use it, I always eat bread! OK, so you might pull it out once or twice in the first week you buy it and convince yourself it’s the best time-saving solution you’ve ever come across. However, a month down the line and it’ll be slipped quietly into the cupboard, never to be seen again.

Spoon rest

Yes, you really can buy somewhere to leave your spoon when you take it out of your tea or take a break in the middle of a dessert. This is a spoon-curved piece of metal which you slot your spoon into to avoid drips… but isn’t that what the saucer is for? If you’re that worried about drips, you’re better off just leaving the spoon in the drink or resting on the dish you’re eating from.

Battery powered salad spinner

Lots of people would argue that a salad spinner of any kind is a waste of time. Pressing a button to whizz your salad around in a motorised colander device isn’t going to get it bone dry anyway, and barely drier than if you’d simply shaken it out yourself in a regular colander. But some people clearly find the strain of repeatedly pressing to spin their salad multiple times a little too strenuous, so prefer to relax as they watch a machine do the hard work for them.

Strawberry huller

In case you don’t own a knife, help is at hand to help you get perfectly hulled strawberries every time in the form of a special strawberry huller. This device punches a hole into the top of the strawberry and plucks out the less-than-tasty leaves, leaving you free to enjoy the rest of the strawberry in its entirety. Or, you know… use a knife.
