The Face of Your Home: 4 Signs It’s Time to Install a New Front Door

The front door is the face of your home. It greets you and your family each day. It welcomes guests and protects you from the elements. But, front doors do not last forever. They have wear and tear, especially since they are exposed to the weather. Fortunately, the signs that it is time to install a new front door are easy to see.

Of course, you can get a new front door at any time for any reason. Many home owners like to wait until there is a reason to invest in a new door. These are some of the signs that it is time to replace the front door. Waiting too long can end up costing a significant amount of money in wasted utilities or further damage to your home.

1. The door is warping

Extreme weather conditions can cause rapid growth and shrinkage in your door. After several seasons of extreme temperature, your door will begin to warp. It could then crack and cause more problems. All homes settle and that, too, can cause the shape of the door to warp. If the warping gets to an extreme, your door might scrap the frame on top or the floor on the bottom. The hinges might not fit well, too. A warped door cannot be repaired. Instead, it will need to be completely replaced.

2. You feel drafts

You might not be able to see where drafts are entering your home, but if you feel them, you know. All too often, doors that are ready to be replaced allow cold air in and warm air out in the winter and the reverse in the summer. If you wait too long to replace your door, you could end up spending a significant amount of money on those drafts. Rather than wasting money and resources, hire a contractor to replace your door.

3. It won’t open or stay closed

When your door won’t stay closed or won’t open easily, it’s time for a new one. You shouldn’t have to break a sweat to get in or out of your home. Often a door that won’t open easily is warped and is catching on the floor or door frame. If the door won’t stay closed, then there is probably an issue with the hinges or the latch. Your door may no longer fit in the frame, so replacing it is the best option, especially if you value your safety.

4. Creatures are entering your home

Bugs and spiders easily find their ways into homes. If you notice that unwanted guests are entering at an increasing rate, then you might have an issue with your front door. Bugs can crawl through cracks in the door or they might crawl under your door if it no longer fits properly. Insects or other small creatures can actually do damage to the inside of your home, especially if you get ants or termites. Bugs and other creatures can bring disease into your home, too. Keeping them out could be as easy as replacing a warped door.
