The Essential DIY Tools

If you like to get jobs done around the house, you need to be prepared. Most jobs are solved with just a few bits and pieces. Others jobs can be a little more tricky. If you’re new to DIY, you might not have any idea where to start. Well, the first step is tools. Even that can be confusing for some people though. So as a solution, we’ll go through a basic guide to the tools you need.

Screwdriver

The DIY staple. The most basic item you need in your DIY wheelhouse. The screwdriver is as its namesake suggests entirely for screws. You might not encounter a lot of screws in your daily life as it is. When you take up DIY though, you’ll be seeing them a lot.

A surprising amount of things around the house have screws in them. You’ll be dismantling things and putting them back together quite frequently in DIY. You’ll be loosening screws and tightening them back up again all day long.

Hammer

Another DIY staple. If something needs a little force to get it into place, a hammer is just what you need. A hammer isn’t just a hammer though. On the back of most new hammers, you’ll see a little claw. This can be used for digging nails out.

Seeing how hammers are usually used to drive nails into things in the first place, it seems only logical to add a way to remove them. Most modern hammers will have a grip too. Not only does that make it easier to hold, but less likely to slip out of your hand when some force is applied.

Drill

This is getting a little further afield in terms of DIY basics. It’s needed though, don’t worry. At more than one point in your DIY career, you’re going to have to drill a hole.

Say you’ve got a cat. You’ve just got them a water bowl that pumps the water around it. The problem is, you want to shut them out into a back room sometimes. There aren’t any plugs in that room though. What can you do?

You drill a small indent into the door frame so you can run the power wire through it. It’ll stay in place regardless of the door being open or closed. All you have to do is plug it in on the other side of the door, and you’re in business.

As for what drill model you can try, there’s always the Hitachi DV18DSDL.

Measuring Tape

Not so much a tool as an assisting partner. This little retractable thing is going to help you a lot when you need to make precise measurements. If you’re doing enough DIY, that’ll happen quite a lot.

Spirit Level

Found usually in a giant ruler-like bar, the spirit level bubble will help you know things are level. Whether you’re hanging a painting or building shelves, this is going to be your best friend out there.

So there we have the basics. DIY is a broad hobby though, so don’t think you can accomplish every job with just these.
