Dump at the door

The first thing to do is keep track of what comes through your door! Shoes bring in mud and leaves from the outside. Your coats, handbags and keys often get strewn over the sofa or kitchen chairs. They slowly move around the house making it untidy. Sound familiar? Avoid this and set up a little space at the door for each of those things. Make sure shoes are taken off and stored at the door. Have a coat rack big enough to hang coats and bags from. Make use of a little bowl for keys and change.

Do the dishes straight away

This is such a simple one, but it’s oh-so tempting to leave it until the next day. It’s really important to power through after dinner and clean up after yourself. It will keep the kitchen free from clutter and reduce the spread of germs. It will also give you a little peace of mind. Once it’s all done and put away, you’re free to enjoy the evening. Take the extra ten minutes to wash up. It will be worth it.

Keep the garden in check

For greenfingered homeowners, there’s nothing better than pruning and chopping and mowing. For the rest of us, however, the garden is one big chore waiting to happen. The trick is doing little bits every so often. During the summer, mow the lawn every couple of weeks. Trim back large bushes and rake up leaves. Some community services like Cedar HOA management might provide this service for you. A tidy garden makes a huge difference to the the look and feel of your home.

‘Reset’ your rooms before you leave them

This is the one that most of us neglect. It’s so easy to leave clutter around, especially when you have kids tearing from room to room. Before you leave the kitchen after dinner, take five minutes to do a quick sweep of the essentials. Put items away, wipe down surfaces and reset everything. When you’ve finished in the living room in the evening, put cushions back in their place. Hide away any of the children’s toys and reset the room. This will stop the mammoth build up of stuff.

Declutter

Every now and then, make time for a complete purge of unnecessary clutter. Take old clothes and toys to charity shops. Get rid of anything that doesn’t have a use or a place. Make sure every item in the house has its own home. That way, everything can be put away and the house will stay tidy.

Stick to little bits at a time and tidying the house is easy. Don’t let it build up!
