Bad habits ruin lives. Whether you drink too much, smoke, or take drugs, eliminating these bad habits is the key to a healthy, happy life. It can be difficult. There are times you’ll want to give up. There may even be times when you relapse. The key is to never give in and always aim to become a better version of yourself. Here’s how to kick bad habits to the curb:
Think of Powerful Reasons for Quitting
You need powerful reasons for quitting your bad habits if you’re going to succeed. If your reasons aren’t powerful enough, then you won’t stick to it. Wanting to quit smoking because it’s bad for you is fine, but is that going to be the thing that keeps you motivated when you’re feeling low and struggling? If not, find other reasons. Look at pictures of lung cancer patients. Scare yourself into quitting. Do it for love – put up pictures of your children and remind yourself each day that you’re doing it for them. You want to be healthy for them and watch them grow up, so don’t pick up that lighter.
Make a Vision Board
A vision board can be an extremely powerful tool for encouraging you to live the life you want. You can have different vision boards for different areas of your life, or one big vision board. Design your ideal life with pictures out of magazines and words that inspire you. Cover it with healthy pictures and things that keep you motivated to be a healthy person. Put it somewhere you can see it every day so that it’s always in the forefront of your mind.
Visit Support Groups
If you need help, there’s no better place to get it than a support group. You can speak to people who have been through the same struggles as you, share advice and stories, and help one another to continue. Research groups in your area.
Maybe you need someone to talk to. How about counseling? Do you feel like working out why you act the way you act could be a big help? If so, a trusted counselor could help you to get to the bottom of it. It might cost you a little money, but it’ll be so worth it in the long run.
Put Yourself in Rehab
If you really want to make a change, there might be no other option than to put yourself in rehab. Do your research on an effective rehab center to work out the best place for you to go.
Speak to Somebody You Trust
Speak to somebody you trust, somebody who won’t judge you. Explain to them your bad habit and see what advice they can give you. Maybe they can arrange a gambling intervention or keep you motivated to stop smoking. Maybe they’ll find the best place for you while you rid yourself of nasty habits. Sometimes, speaking to somebody you love can be all the motivation you need.
