Summer Days: Embrace The Positive, But Be Ready For The Negative

If you were asked to say which season of the year you most associate with relaxation, you’d probably say “summer”. Certainly, most people do. There’s a reason for this – it’s when most of us go on holiday. Additionally, the warmer it gets, the less likely we are to want to be too active. Sure, we’ll garden, occasionally we’ll have a spring clean (yes, even in summer). But we want to be in the garden with a cold drink by evening.

However, for some of us – a grouping that don’t like to talk about it because so many worship the sun – summer is less relaxing. Yes, the sun is good for so many reasons including mood. But the hotter it gets, and the brighter the sun, the harder it is to escape. And it can become oppressive if you don’t deal well with heat.

If you have a cat or a dog, watch them when they’re too hot. They give up and sprawl on the floor. And if you don’t say “Yeah, me too, buddy” to them, then you’re one of the lucky ones. Summer can be hard to escape.

Sunshine: Great In The Right Doses

It’s scientifically proven that getting enough daylight is important for our mood and other aspects of health. But too much of it can actually be hard to deal with. Sometimes when it’s hot, and you’re tired, a nap feels like heaven. But if the sun is blazing outside, that can be hard.

Solution: Fitting some cellular blinds is a good idea in these situations, as they can really black out a room and allow some refuge.

The Heat: There Can Be Too Much Of A Good Thing

Complaining about the heat is still seen in some circles as sacrilege. We complain about rain, snow, wind and cold, and people nod. Particularly if you live somewhere milder, people will find it odd if you complain about the heat. “Don’t offend the sun,” they seem to say. “If it goes, I’m blaming you!”.

If it’s cold, you can put on layers. If it rains, you can wear a jacket or coat. If it’s sunny, public decency dictates you can only strip down so far. And even in the comfort of your own home, where you can wear nothing, it can still be too hot. And then there’s nothing left to take off.

Solution: Air conditioning is a must, if this is a problem you experience.

Pests: They Love The Summer

Mosquitoes, flies, and wasps, oh my! As Judy Garland didn’t say, ever. Although it can feel like the Wicked Witch has cast a spell on your garden during the summer. You try to garden, have a barbecue or just sit quietly with a drink, but the next day you are covered in bumps. Flying pests do like to take a bite out of you, and you’re a summer delicacy.

Solution: Buy a spray-on insect repellent, or make your own.

Summer doesn’t have to be a bummer, even if you’re someone who finds the above things trying. By finding ways to deal with the worst, you can enjoy those summer months and look forward to a mild autumn.
