Some Things You Should Never DIY

Knowing how to do basic DIY is a skill that any homeowner should have. Not only can it save you a fortune over the years, but it can be a really rewarding way of spending your time. However, no matter how good your skills are unless you’re a professional, there are some home repairs that you should probably not attempt yourself…

Electrical work

Obviously, you can change your own lightbulbs and fuses and things like that, but unless you’re a qualified electrician, you really should not be fiddling around with faulty wiring. Doing so could end up with you getting injured or starting a fire somewhere down the line, and it just isn’t worth it. Call in a professional electrician and let them do the complicated stuff.

Mold removal

Okay, so if it’s everyday harmless mold we’re talking out, getting rid of it with bleach or a vinegar solution is simple and something that pretty much anyone can do around the house. If, however, you suspect that you have dangerous black mold in the home, calling in a professional emergency cleanup contractor, who has all of the correct safety equipment and training to handle this potentially dangerous substance, is the smart choice.

Garage door repair

The thing about garage door repairs is that they look like they should be simple, so it’s tempting to take care of them without any help. The thing is, if you’re going to do it right, you’re going to need various specialist tools that you might not have lying around the house, and which will cost you a lot of money to buy. If you don’t have these tools, and if you don’t conduct the repair absolutely to the book, you could also end up injuring yourself. After all, garage doors are spring-mounted and it would be so easy for those springs to become loose or detached and for the doors to fall and hurt you! Book a repairman and focus on some simpler DIY fixes instead.

Roof work

Although reattaching tiles or removing moss from the roof is actually not that difficult in theory, you need to take into account that you will be high up on the roof, which could be slippy, working art some pretty difficult angles. All it takes is one slip and you could end up with serious injuries. It’s far better to hire a qualified roofer with all of the right safety equipment for these kinds of jobs. They’ll also likely use fewer materials to do the job, which will save you money too.

Crown molding

Again, on the face of it, doing your own crown molding installation doesn’t seem that complicated, but it’s actually really easy to get it wrong, and since the whole point of crown molding is to make your home look better, it’s something best left to the professionals who know exact,y how to measure, cut and smooth your molding for appearance.

Although you should never attempt these particular DIY fixes, don’t let that put you off DIY altogether because there are plenty of skills you can learn to do well in very little time.
