Seasonal Design: Organic Interior Inspiration

An element of nature has been at the forefront of interior design thinking for as long as I can remember. Even if it’s an understated component in a room’s composition, many people still strive for an organic overtone. Why? The answer to that question predates even contemporary living. For as long as we’ve been around as a moderately developed race, we’ve turned to nature as decor. The subtle highlights of the outside world bring about an aura of tranquility, which makes it perfect for a relaxing home.

This is of utmost importance in modern living, where the pressures and stresses of our daily lives are at an all-time high. Coming home from a long day at the office or countless hours of hard work should be a certain remedy for your nine to five blues. Your home, by design, is where you turn for an escape. It should rightly feel like your own safe space; a place to be at peace with your own mind. Isn’t it a little bit ironic that the best way to convey those feelings are by turning to the outside world?

Organic elements are making a triumphant return to interior design trends. Having dominated this season, they’re showing no signs of slowing down. Here are the best ways to introduce a natural theme in any home without jeopardising your existing decor.

Avoid Artificial

The temptation to buy artificial products has never been greater. They’re cheaper, generally last longer, and are uniform in appearance. While those might be some pretty compelling arguments, artificial isn’t going to give the same results as organic. More and more designers are beginning to embrace the ‘real,’ and it works better than anything else. Things like house plants can be a pain to maintain, but they’re worth the effort for creating a harmonious living space.

Strive for Imperfection

We spend an awful lot of time, especially when it comes to design, trying to get things right. We agonize over creating some kind of fictional artificial balance. While it’s true that color schemes, composition, and layout can have a profound effect on our mood, it’s not supposed to be perfect. Draw inspiration from the outside world. See how everything aligns together despite alleged imperfections. Things can be ugly, by our aesthetic definition, and yet complete. Avoid mass-produced furniture and embrace handmade products, like those from Ian Snow interiors. Warts and all.

Utilize Natural Light

We already know all about the correlation between lighting and mood. The dark brings about feelings of lethargy and is largely responsible for the winter blues. Make good use of natural sunlight in your home to create an authentic natural aura. Think about big windows and French doors. The more light you let in your home, the more peaceful the overall feel is going to be. Not to mention the dramatic effects it can have on your health. Artificial light will, of course, be entirely necessary for the winter, but try not to cultivate an over-reliance on it.
