Maintaining a home is a never-ending task. There is always something that could be improved or that needs fixing. At times, it feels like there’s so much to do, you don’t know where to start. Follow our simple tips to prioritize the work.

  1. Make A List

Make a comprehensive list with two columns. If you use an online tool or app, you can move items around more easily. On one side write down all the fixes that need to be completed. On the other side, note down all the upgrades you would like to make.

Go through the fixes first. Highlight any items that are urgent. For example, leaks, blockages, etc. These will need to go to the top of the list. Anything that could cause damage to your home should be tackled straight away.

Next, move onto the renovations. You can prioritize in several ways. Are there items that interfere with your daily life? For example, are there problems in the kitchen that prevent you from cooking? Are there items that interfere with your happiness? For example, are you sick and tired of looking at your half-painted living room? Budget is a big consideration when making any changes, and this should be factored in. Think about other practical factors, such as completing the guest room in time for a visitor.

Once you have gone through the entire list and considered all factors, you should be in a position to prioritize. Rather than just putting the items in order, try and add a timeline. Adding target dates for completion will help you to tick the items off the list.

  1. Split Big Projects

When undertaking big projects, split them into smaller tasks. Work out the order in which they should be completed. As general rule of thumb always fix the roof first. There’s no point in decorating the upstairs of your home if a leak in the roof could cause damage. Potentially all your hard work could be ruined and money wasted.

When carrying out work to the roof, look for honest roofing estimates and quality workmanship. Working with a reputable firm will save you money in the long run.

Make common sense decisions about the order in which projects are carried out. For example, put down new flooring before you decorate. When laying carpet or wooden flooring, you can easily scrape paintwork. Make sure you protect the new floor when decorating.

  1. Think Of The Future

When undertaking any projects, it’s important to think of the future.

  • How will the project affect the saleability of your home?
  • Will it save you money on energy bills?
  • How will the changes impact on the environment?
  • Will the changes become dated over time?
  • How long will the renovations last?

Ask yourself all of these questions when making decisions.

No matter how house-proud you are, there will also be something to work on in your home. This could be something simple like a cosmetic change. Or it could be a more complex project. You will never run out of home improvements. So it’s important to prioritize tasks. Work out what will bring the most benefit to you? This could be a monetary benefit. Or, it could be related to your everyday life. Put together a list and work from there. Working through items in order will potentially save you a lot of time and money.
