Preparing Your Backyard for the Winter Months

If you love your backyard, you’ve probably spent extended periods of time over the summer tending to it. You’ll have made sure that everything is neat and tidy with grass cut and weeds pulled, that any plants are well watered and protected from pests, and that everything looks presentable. But as the weather drops and we start to experience rain and snow, the majority of us will step away from our gardening responsibilities and retire to the indoors. But it’s extremely important that you still pay your garden attention, no matter how frosty it may be! To help you along the way, here are a few different things that you can do to prepare your green space for the winter months and maintain it through the grim weather!

Rake Leaves or Use a Leaf Blower

As the leaves begin to fall from the trees, your yard is likely to start to become covered with crisp yellow, orange, red, and brown Autumnal tones. This may be pretty. But it’s extremely important that you rake them up. Why? Well, if they are left on the grass, they can cause serious damage by blocking out sunlight and preventing the grass itself from photosynthesising. You don’t want the leaves to eventually be blown away, only for dead grass to be left. If you don’t have the energy or time to rake, you could invest in a leaf blower instead. This may be a little more expensive, but it is more than worth it!

Have Paving Installed

If you have pets who run around the backyard a lot, you may find yourself having to clean mucky paws and all of the surfaces that they touch each time your pooch returns from their play out back. You can minimise the mud by having Paving Stones installed. Paving stones can easily be washed down and are less likely to accumulate dirt than the grass. It also looks great, so this could truly prove to be a win-win situation!

Invest in Evergreen Trees

Flowering trees may well be lovely in the summertime, but during the winter months they can look barren and bland. If you want a touch of colour to remain out back once the flowers and leaves have dropped, you should invest in some evergreen trees. They keep their leaves during the winter and also have a traditional festive feel. If you really want to go all out in December, you could even decorate them with specialist outdoor fairy lights. Different species of fir that might suit well include Balsalm Firs, Nordmann Firs, Noble Firs, and Fraser Firs.

These are just a few different steps that you could take to prepare your garden for the winter months and maintain it throughout. It’s best to get started sooner rather than later, as this will reduce the amount of work you have to do when the weather drops to much lower temperatures!
