This is my second Pinterest fail! I have tried 4 times to use essential oils to refill my Air Wick plug ins. According to guides I found on Pinterest, you use a metal butter knife to CAREFULLY remove the rubber top that connects the wick to the jar. You have to do it carefully, as you don’t want to injure yourself or the wick. It took a little practice, but once you pop them off a time or two, you get the hang of it. That was not the problem…
The problem was once you refill it–which consists of adding anywhere from a few drops to about a quarter of the jar full of essential oil and filling the rest with lukewarm water (not sure if the temp matters or not). Then you close the stopper, make sure it’s completely dry and plug it in.
EVERY SINGLE TIME I tried, the wick expanded, causing the air wick to empty within days and even be a tad burnt. See how the wick takes up almost half of the jar? Well it’s supposed to just be a skinny tube. It seems to be wrapped in something like parchment paper. I have tried with varying amounts of water and oil, but the end result is always the same. This technique is supposed to work with any scented oil diffuser with a rubber stopper and wick (ie Air Wick, Glade, etc). I have only tried this on Air Wicks.

I’ve never had luck refilling those things. It just doesn’t seem to work for me.
I have had varying degrees of success refilling bath and bodyworks. I always but the empty ones in my drawer until I’m ready to refill. Not sure if thats the trick, letting them dry before refilling them? Also i don’t use essential oils. I use oils used to make candles and such that I get from saveonscents.com. Sometimes they turn out great. I have one i refilled over a year ago and it still makes my room smell great. I have also had some that do the same as yours. i always though it was the amount of water i added that made it do that. But the one that has been going for a year was mostly water. So in short IDK the magic trick, but I have gotten it to work on many occasions.

Use Carrier oil, I tried with water and also had the same problem so i tried with a carrier oil and It did not expand.
You don’t use water. Oil floats on top of water. Oil and water don’t mix. Some suggest using a sunflower oil to mix with. Some suggest just using straight up warming oil.
