Not Another Missed Delivery: Making Sure Even The Postman Can Find Your Hidden Home

When we’re looking for a new house, many of us relish the idea of an escape in the country. The more out of the way a home is, the higher in our estimation it goes. Imagine the uninterrupted walks and the peace of a garden with no houses near. It’s the stuff of homeowner dreams.

But, an escape like this isn’t without flaws. There are issues of practicality when the nearest shop is miles away, and you have to travel half an hour to get to town. But, most of us can overlook things like that. What isn’t as easy to look past is the difficulty people will have finding the place. Be it friends or delivery people; you can be sure that you’ll soon get sick of giving directions. Every time you order something, you’ll get a call asking you to collect from the post office. Which is ten miles out of your way! This kind of thing can soon become a significant stress in your life. .

Which is why you may want to consider ways you can make your house easier for all to find. This is especially crucial if you order a lot, or have guests often. Just a few attempts at giving directions over the phone are sure to leave you at the end of your tether. So, avoid it altogether by taking these steps.

Light it up

When it comes to increasing visibility, nothing is better than lighting. Putting this to use could help to guide people to your door, especially if your house is set back from the road. You could use lighting in a few different ways here. You could place lights on either side of the entrance to your home. This way, people will spot them as soon as they’re in the right area. You could even warn guests to look out for these to ensure no one drives past without seeing. If you’re really off the road, you could invest in a house sign and get something like these gooseneck sign lights to highlight it with. Set this in a place which is visible to those going by and again, let guests know to look out for it. Bear in mind that, with both of these options, you’ll need to keep your lights reasonably subtle. Something too bright could prove a distraction and cause accidents. Make sure, also, that your efforts are within your property boundaries. This is easy enough to check and can ensure you don’t find yourself in trouble. Other than that, there’s no reason these options can’t solve your issues.

Cut back foliage

It may seem a shame to cut back the foliage outside of your property. After all, that hedge stops road noise coming through. That tree provides some much-needed privacy. But, foliage isn’t always your friend, especially if it keeps your property hidden. It may well seem magical when you climb through the bushes and arrive at your front door, but it isn’t practical. It certainly won’t help other people find you when they need to. Hence why you should cut things back the moment they get out of control. This doesn’t mean you have to hack down hedges and tear down that tree. It means that you should prune the worst offenders when they become a problem. This way, you can keep your privacy while also being practical about the situation. You could get out there with some handheld shears, or invest in an electric trimmer depending on the work. Don’t worry about doing this in your backyard, as it won’t make any difference there. Focus on the very front of your property. You may also find that this step increases the amount of light you get, so it’s worth taking all around. Your future guests will thank you for it.

Build a proper path

Another option would be to build a proper path or driveway leading to your property. If you currently have nothing more than a dirt trail, is it any wonder people drive past without thought? The countryside is filled with trails like that, and most of them lead nowhere. Avoid any confusion by installing a paved lead-up which no one can mistake. As well as serving a practical purpose, this is sure to look fantastic. Either invest in concrete for the job or buy individual slabs and create a path that way. Whichever you choose, you could even line the walkway with lights to guide people up to your door. When using this many light bulbs, though, you may want to opt for solar-powered choices. That’ll save on electricity costs, while also ensuring the lighting isn’t too bright when you look out your window!

Make use of your windows

Speaking of windows, it’s worth focusing your attention here, too. Your upper-floor windows, in particular, could make a considerable difference to visibility. That’s not to say, of course, that you should mess with your property just for visibility. But, there are a few style designs which could inadvertently help. For instance, placing shutters outside your windows could really help add to that country vibe, while also making your house stand out. This is especially the case if you opt for bright shutters. Equally, placing a dazzling selection of flowers in a window box is sure to catch the eye. Again, this could be the ideal complement to your home. Play around with options like these and consider which would work best for you. Even something as subtle as bright curtains could be enough to catch the eye of passers-by.  If you like the idea of each of these, why not incorporate them all to increase your chances of being found?

A final word

As you can see, there are plenty of options you could take when it comes to making your house easier to find. All you need to do is think outside the box a little, and keep on top of matters to ensure your efforts work in the long-run.
