NMEDA Mobility Awareness Month

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association. All opinions are 100% mine.

Earlier last year I underwent hip surgery. This may be shocking to some as I was only 31 years old. I have rheumatoid arthritis and had a torn labrum and hip impingement. Apparently hip impingements aren’t big in my area, so finding a surgeon was tricky. I ended up seeing my rheumatologist’s third recommendation. I had the labrum removed and bone shaved off to fix the impingement. During this surgery (which was arthroscopic and put me on a funky table where they dislocated my hip to do the surgery) I ended up with femoral nerve damage. After a year of aggressive physical therapy, I was told that the damage was likely permanent. Due to this, I have a limp on that side and going up steps is almost impossible for me. While you need to be qualified for an NMEDA mobility vehicle (more on this below), the point I am trying to make is that I understand what it’s like to have to plan or (as in my case) rearrange your life to fit mobility issues. I had to move to a 1st floor apartment with no steps. I know the struggle of visiting family and friends who aren’t handicap friendly.

May launches National Mobility Awareness Month

, so I’m going to highlight the benefits of these wheelchair accessible vehicles, which enables people with disabilities to take back some control and independence in their lives. NMEDA has a Quality Assurance Program (QAP) that connects you with a personal Accredited Dealer that will help you with expert experience to find the best equipment to help your particular mobility issues. Some examples of what a dealer might offer includes a wheelchair ramp, steering aids, hand controls, transfer seats, wheelchair securement or tie downs, special acceleration and braking solutions for adaptive vehicles, and scooter lifts.

Your NMEDA QAP dealer can offer an in-person eval, one on one training of your new equipment, and access to 24 hour local roadside emergency services.
