Making Your Home More Accessible This Winter

As we get older, it becomes more and more apparent that we have to work hard to stay healthy and fit. Sadly, after the age of 26 our bodies begin to decay at a faster rate than it regenerates – and this means we must take care of ourselves even more.

Winter is a harsh season for many reasons, but one of those is that you will end up with higher risk of many health issues. It also means that getting around in our houses might become somewhat more challenging.

Today it is time to make your home more accessible for yourself and your partner, and to ensure that just because you are aging you don’t end up struggling to get around.

Keep it warm

It is important for us to layer up and stay warm during winter if we are to be healthy. Many of us suffer from poor circulation and raynaud’s disorder, and this can cause us to struggle moving joints and muscles when cold. To ensure you don’t lose the grip in your fingers or the feeling in your toes, wrap up warm at home and also make sure to invest in better heating. Consider installing better insulation around the home to ensure that you don’t get caught out cold this winter and suffer with your mobility.

Repave your driveway

One of the things you may not have considered when you grow a little older is that you might need a wheelchair or a walking stick. One way to make the home more easily accessible is to repave the driveway and ensure a smooth surface to move on. Avoid paving stones and instead opt for brushed concrete to create a better experience for yourself and those who visit.

Create an accessible garden

As well as inside your home it is important to consider your outdoor space. A garden can be a valuable asset to any home and you may find as you grow older that a garden is even more important to your mental health and well-being. To ensure that you can still enjoy the fresh air in your garden, consider creating a walkway which runs from the front of the garden right to the back – perhaps leading to a seating area. The addition of a pathway through your garden is a wonderful thing and it will allow you to enjoy your life much more in retirement.

Add mobility technology

Now that you are getting a little older, it is time to make previsions to keep the house accessible for you as well as your friends or other family members. It is important to get items such as wheelchair ramps and bath rails installed in your home to help with the mobility of everyone in your household. One of the helpful things you can do is also invest in a chair or sofa which has a remote and will incline as you stand up.

We hope you stay mobile and independent this winter and take on these simple tips to make life a little easier as you grow older.
