Making the Most of your Loft

In most homes the loft space is often ignored, underused and unloved. But it doesn’t have to be this way. With a little bit of imagination and a lot of hard work, you can transform that dark and gloomy space into something magnificent that you will be proud to show off to your family and friends.

Loft Bedroom Conversion

Without a doubt the most popular type of loft conversion is to create an additional bedroom. This is perhaps not the most imaginative use, but it does add value to your home and is perhaps the most functional use, especially if you have a growing family to accommodate. Looking into a dark dank attic it may seem that it would make a pretty miserable bedroom. In fact once converted the loft room is often the most popular in the house. With roof lights or dorma windows, you bring in a lot of natural light and being the highest room in the house you get access to the most wonderful views.

The Loft Office

If you have your own business, work from home or even if you just like a private area to handle the household paperwork, then an office conversion could be the way to go. Being at the top of the home a loft office gives you a nice peaceful area to work, with more privacy than anywhere else in the home.  The perimeter of the loft room is often unsuitable for standing, but it does provide the possibility for custom built storage areas for all your office supplies and documents.

The Loft Play Room

Children love to play, but sometimes the mess and noise can drive you to distraction. Why not create a space in your home especially for your children to enjoy themselves. The room can be finished in easy clean materials and you can build in all the storage you need to ensure they keep it tidy when they are done playing in there. With a play room you can really let your creative juices flow by designing the room to a theme, such as a pirate ship, their favourite cartoon or perhaps a magical forest.

Create Your Own Special Retreat

Everybody needs a place they can relax and escape the stresses of life, even if just for a little while. This type of room really needs to be specific to you, but here are a few examples to consider.

Home fitness studio: The loft really isn’t suitable for heavy gym equipment, but you can fit some smaller exercise machines, yoga mats, gym balls, mirror. You could even include a TV to watch your exercise videos, or just to entertain yourself while exercising.

Games room: Whether you want the latest console with a huge TV screen, a pool table or more retro pinball machines; or perhaps a model railway set. The loft can be a place set aside away from the kids to get into the zone and into your games.

Chill out room: If you need a place to fully relax, mediate or a more informal place to hang out with your friends, why not create a little haven in your loft. Get plenty of large cushions and bean bags, perhaps some soft fabrics draping from the ceiling and a nice sound system to play some chilled out music.
