Interior Design: Don’t Make These Rookie Mistakes!

If you’ve ever heard that interior design is easy, then your source was lying! There are countless aspects to good interior design, which can all have profound effects on one another. Without enough planning and deliberation, one small slip-up can ruin the look of the entire space! To save yourself a lot of stress and money, you should be aware of the most common interior design mistakes.

One of the most costly blunders you can make is buying your furniture before you measure out the room. I’m not just talking about the width and length here, either. You need to take different heights into account, and how they influence the overall mien of a room. The traditional way of doing this was by walking from place to place with a tape measure, umming and erring about how this or that item would look. Interior design tech has come a long way since then. There are now a range of free room planning tools you can access and use online. Whether you use this or the old-fashioned method, make sure you do some advance planning before hitting all the family furniture stores.

Another big mistake is doing all of your shopping in one day. I know you’ve got other responsibilities, and it may feel more convenient to get all the shopping out of the way in one day. However, when you get home and start setting things up, you may quickly discover that certain pieces don’t fit. Try to take your time, and set rooms up in baby steps. Interior design is an art form, and no good art can be rushed. You could set a day for lighting, where you pick out lamps, mirrors and shades. Then, have a day just for your canvases and sculptures. As you add layers, consider how the room’s coming along. This will make it much easier to pick out pieces that balance out and complement the room.

Finally, ignoring textiles. When you’re new to interior design, it can be easy to focus on painting straight away. Sure a fresh coat of paint can have a pretty profound effect on the mood of a room. The textiles in the room; rugs, curtains, carpets, are completely ignored. Then, you take a step back, and realise that the two main shades in the room create a horrible discord! When you’re picking out a colour scheme for the room, make sure to consider the whole colour scheme. Picking out the shades of paint, and then the fabrics that you’re going to use, is a sure way to make things hard on yourself. For some easy, straightforward redecorating, choose the fabrics first. As you gain more experience, you’ll learn about how different textures mix better with certain shades. Then, you’ll easily be able to toy with paint to make a room that’s comfortable and harmonious.

I hope that this post hasn’t reached you all too late! Avoid these three mistakes as you begin designing your home. It will save you huge amounts of both time and money!
