Interior Decorating: Things You Should Never Do

When decorating a space in your home, it can be a little overwhelming with all the rules and tips to go by. Well, truth is, decorate however you want to decorate! However, just in case you want to maintain a good “flow” of your room, here are some things you should never do.

  • Never choose furniture that does not fit

When you place furniture that is too big for your area, it makes the space look over-crowded in some places then bare in others. A good tip is to measure your space, plan your arrangement, and think it over, then shop for any big pieces of furniture.

  • Never use too many patterns and prints

Before shopping, you may want to plan a color scheme and select a main pattern you would like to go with the color. After that, find coordinating stripes, small prints, or even plaids to tie everything together.

A good tip: Select one main large print, then find one small print such as a stripe or plaid then call it quits; do not go overboard with the patterns!

If you want more fabric or more textures to the look, choose a solid colored texture or pattern that will match with the other patterns and colors. It will make your space look modern and funky!

  • Do not “float” a rug in the middle of your room

Meaning, do not place an area rug all by itself in the middle of the room. A rug needs to connect with the other pieces of furniture in the room. A square rug should be tucked under the front legs of chairs, sofas, and tables. If you place a square rug in the middle of the floor without any furniture around it, it actually poses a safety hazard. It is easy to trip and fall on the corners. In addition, please do not put small rugs on top of big rugs. This makes the room look tacky and overwhelming.

  • Do not push your furniture against the wall

You may think that if you push all your furniture against the wall, the room will look bigger due to more space in the middle of the room; well this is not true. Actually, doing the opposite will make your room look open and “airy”. Instead, try pulling your sofa away from the wall, put a table behind it, and place some of your nice decorations on it to show off the back of the sofa. There should be a big enough space behind the sofa to walk behind. In addition, move the chairs out of the corners! This will make your area look more spacious.

  • Do not decorate with your collectables!

This is one of the most common decorating mistakes. People like to show off their collectables; and you can, just not all of them at the same time! If you put out every collectable you have ever gotten, it will make your home look extremely crowded and dirty. Surely, you do not want that. If you do not like to throw things out, just rotate your collectables every few months, doing this will refresh your space and keep you happy at the same time!
