In Praise Of Pets

Let us start this year with an ode to pets. Pets are known to complete a family unit, but are fully functioning members of the family themselves. It is intrinsically healthy to develop a bond with an animal, and to care for them. It is a beautiful thing to care for a rescue, or to find a home for a well-breeded pet. If you’re feeling a little put out by vet medical bills as of late, you’re considering purchasing a pet for the first time, or you simply wish to rekindle those loving feelings for an animal you had in your childhood, let this love letter to pets help motivate you.

In this article we will be focusing on the furry pets, such as cats and especially small dogs. This is because lizards, birds and other exotic animals can be harder to develop a relationship with, and require much more work than a first-time owner will likely be comfortable with. Without further ado:

Pets Can Challenge Us

A good pet is not something that simply provides you love no matter how you treat it. Owning a pet is an exercise in kindness, in love and reciprocal trust. This is why it can be excellent to introduce your pet to your grandkids or children, as this is important for them to learn. Cats can be more challenging and will come to like you at their own pace. Dogs will often be happy with you if you treat them well and give them space to explore. No matter which you choose, a beautiful kitten or even getting in touch with a Golden Retriever puppy breeder (perhaps one of the most beautiful and cute puppies you could ever buy,) becoming a responsible pet owner gives us the chance to grow in character, and to be better people from the offset. To us, that sounds pretty worthwhile.

Pets Can Comfort Us

Pets can comfort us, which is perhaps what they’re known for. Having a pet sit on your lap as you watch television, or follow you around outside can serve almost as a form of ‘love heater.’ The unconditional relationship you can share with a pet is one that is in no way superficial, small or silly. Instead it is beautiful. When you think about it, the phrase ‘Man’s best friend’ is perhaps one of the most lovely that we learn in childhood and accept. What you give a pet in companionship, love, attention and tending to their needs, they will repay over and over again. It’s no wonder how pets can serve as a brilliantly soothing mental health aid.

Pets Grow With Us

There’s nothing more precious than spending time with someone, and a pet knows you as their entire world. They bring their entire lives into your home, and understand you are their world. As such, they grow with you as you grow with them. This forms of a bond between the both of you. The friendship here can be palpable, as can the companionship. Pets grow with us, whether than be catching mice in your back garden, feeling territorial over your property, or welcoming in a new arrival in the form of a grandchild, a life shared is a life doubled in enjoyment, and pets certainly count among that metric.

With these simple pointers, we can appreciate our pets anew, or rush out to taste some of this wonder for ourselves.
