A newly installed swimming pool can make your home feel like a million dollar mansion. However, over the years, you could notice that your pool loses some of its glamor. Pumps may stop working as efficiently and the surface of the pool may start to become worn and discolored. This is particularly the case with a poorly maintained pool, however even a well-maintained pool will start to experience wear and tear after 10 or 15 years.

You may even start to get bored with your pool. Adding some modifications could be a way to make your pool exciting again. Below are just some of the improvements that could be worth splashing out on to freshen up your aging pool.

Resurface your pool

Pools often need to be resurfaced every 10 to 20 years. Installing new lining can make a pool look brand new. It could also be a chance to play around with new patterns and colors.

Certain colors can have different effects on your pool. A white liner can help the water to appear blue, a green liner could help your pool blend in with your lawn and dark blue liner could create a sense of depth.

You could take the opportunity to also play around with different tile patterns and textures. This could include ornate mosaic patterns or even a sandy look for a caribbean beach feel.

It’s worth hiring a professional to resurface your pool in order to make sure that it is done properly. The cost will vary very much depending on the size of the pool and the type of lining you choose.

Refresh your pool decking

It’s worth also considering the deck around your pool. If this has become worn and faded, it could be time to replace it.

There are all kinds of pool deck ideas that you can look into. As with the lining of your pool, you can experiment with all kinds of different colors and textures. Stone decking is the most popular option around a pool, however you could opt for wooden decking for a more rustic touch.

Add a diving board

A diving board could be a fun feature to add to your pool. This could be a simple meter platform or a springboard.

To add a diving board, your pool needs to be a minimum of 11.5ft deep (and even deeper if you’re going to install a raised diving board). Older pools were often built to be deeper, while modern pools are typically more shallow and may need to be modified to increase their depth.

Add a slide

Slides are a fun feature to add if you’ve got kids (although there’s no reason why adults can’t use them too).

There are all kinds of different slide designs that you can look into from straight slides to curved slides. With larger slides, you’ll need to make sure that the pool is deep enough to slide into. In all cases, the pool should be at least 36 inches deep when installing a slide.

Update the pump

A new pump could be a practical modification worth installing. If your pump is very old it could be a lot less efficient at filtering water than a newer model. You could also find that a new pump saves you energy and it may even be quieter.

You can research pool pumps online. A pool pump should always be installed by a professional.

Switch to new purification methods

While upgrading your pool pump, it also makes sense to reassess the purification method that you use. Chlorine is the traditional method, but you can use other methods too – some of which may not involve putting as many chemicals in your pool.

UV sanitation could be one option to look into. UV light can kill 99.9% of germs and works well in all climates. You can buy UV sanitation systems for pools that are typically installed near the pump.

Add pool heating

Adding heating to your pool could allow you to use it in all weathers at all times of the year. This can be achieved by installing a heat pump, which filters and heats the water at the same time. A professional will be able to install this for you.

Pool heating can be expensive, not just to install but to run – you could find that your energy bills increase after installing a heat pump. It’s possible to run heat pumps off of solar panels, which could help to reduce your bills.
