How to Sell Your Car

How to Sell Your CarSo you have a used car you want to sell and you don’t want to trade it in. Well, good on you because there are several very excellent tools to use that will sell your car faster than you ever imagined.

Let’s talk about Craigslist. Many people use this site and many people sell what they want to sell, and very quickly. Plus, you do not have to pay a fee of any kind. It is a little more difficult than it was in the old days when everybody on the planet did not know how to use a site like Craigslist. Now, there is quite a bit of competition, so you have to know a few tricks of the trade.

  1. Make sure you can find the title. If your car is not paid off, you’ll need to check with your loan company before you try to sell it online.

  2. Print out a bill of sale template from online. You’ll need one and so will the buyer.

  3. Always list your car for more that you want to make from it. People on Craigslist like to haggle.

  4. Take pictures from every angle. Show the good with the bad.

  5. Make your copy clear and concise, and be as upfront as you can when telling about the car.

  6. Ask for cash.

Another sound way to sell your car yourself is still the old reliable newspaper. Use ‘em before they’re gone, right? Because newspapers are feeling the pressure of the internet, they are not at the top of their game financially. The price for a classified ad these days might be higher than you want to pay. If you advertise in a small community paper, however, the price for the ad will be minimal and you can get a little snazzy with the copy and picture.

Many people sell their used cars on eBay, and I’m sure some cars sell that way. The only problem with eBay is the fee to sell is high. Also, you have to work your payments through PayPal, which adds another fee. The other complaint being passed around about eBay is that if you are not a long-time seller on the site, it is not easy to get customers to a) visit your page, or b) trust you.

There are companies that will buy your used car from you. Some are online, some not, but they will give you a quote on their website or by telephone, and come and pick up your vehicle, in most cases within 24 hours. They pay cash, and the pay-out is pretty good. They can usually be found online if you search for companies that buy cars. They are in the market for not just junk cars, but used cars, as well.

Sometimes the old-fashioned ways work, too. If you are selling your vehicle at a bargain basement price, why not put a sign in the window of your automobile, and use a marker to write your non-negotiable price on the sign and park it in your neighborhood Walmart parking lot? The lowest price you will take is going to work. No one wants to haggle in the Walmart parking lot. Who knows, with enough people going in and out for 12 hours a day, it just might sell.

Just remember these important tips when you decide to sell your car on your own:

  1. Never let a prospective buyer test drive your car by himself. He might not return.

  2. Take someone with you when you are meeting a prospective buyer.

  3. Meet in a public place just to be cautious.

  4. If you do not know the buyer, deal only in cash.

Happy Selling!
