How much money do you spend on cleaning products? And how healthy are they for you and the environment? Why not try to get a super-clean bathroom that is easy to maintain with cheap, eco-friendly solutions? Read on for our money saving tips for a greener, cleaner bathroom.

Clean Your Toilet

Cleaning a toilet couldn’t be easier and more eco-friendly. Just throw a cup of white vinegar and half a cup of baking soda into the toilet bowl and watch it fizz up. Once it has calmed down, use your toilet brush to clean, and then close the lid and flush.

Smell Nicer

Use homemade solutions and add a squeeze of lemon, lime, or both to make them smell great and for a fresher fragrance in your bathroom. Got any leftover booze in the house? You can make a great air freshener with some vodka, gin, or even rubbing alcohol. Mix a little of it in with filtered water and a few drops of an essential oil of your choice. Good ones to use are lemon or citrus oils, jasmine or lavender. Try peppermint for something really fresh-smelling.

Save Water

Most toilets use too much water when they flush. Help conserve it – and cut down on your water rates – by taking an empty plastic bottle and filling it with sand and water. The place it into your toilet tank and voila – you are now using less water than you were before.

Find An Alternative Heat Source

Is your airing cupboard in your bathroom? If so, just turn off the bathroom radiator permanently and use the heat from your water heater. If the cupboard door traps the heat, in, just replace it with some louvre doors. The heat will escape from the slats in the doors and help to keep your bathroom warm.

Blocked Drains

Blocked drains are a pain, but you don’t necessarily need expensive, harsh chemicals to get things moving again. Just pour a cup of baking soda down the plug hole and then add a cup of vinegar. It will froth up for a bit, and then you can run some hot water and get busy with your plunger.

Steamy Windows & Mirrors

Is there anything more irritating than steamed up windows when you have just got out of the shower? Well, maybe. But if it does get your goat up, don’t waste money on expensive streak-proof wipes. There’s an easy fix. All you need to do is give them a good wipe with some standard shaving cream, and they won’t fog up anymore.

Bad Smelling Drains

We’ve all had nasty smells emanating from our drains at some point, but there’s an easy solution. Get some Arm & Hammer baking soda and pour it down the hole. This should start deodorizing things straight away, and you can rinse out with water after a few minutes.

Hopefully, this should give you some inspiration to make your own eco-friendly cleaning products. They are so cheap to make that there is plenty of opportunity for trial and error. If you have any successful tips that you want to share, please don’t hesitate to let us know!
