How to Make Your Basement a Nice Place to Be

The basement isn’t usually a nice place to be. You can spruce it up a little and make it a bit more homely, but there can still be an unwelcoming element to it. A sort of dark, dank, ‘cave-like’ feeling. If you want to remove that feeling and make your basement a truly nice place to be, use the following advice:

Get a Nice Area Rug

The floor in the basement is usually concrete. It’s cold and hard to step on, which isn’t very welcoming or comfortable. To help, get a nice area rug that will cover up most of the floor. Not only will it make it look nicer, it’ll also be warmer and more comfortable to step on. A nice rug can  instantly make any room feel like home!

Add Pillows for Comfort

Pillows instantly add a feeling of comfort to a room, so it’s a great idea to add some to your basement. Assuming you have a nice sofa in there, pile up the cushions to create a more homely effect. Mix and match sizes and patterns to create a cool vibe – you don’t need to worry about making the basement look sophisticated! There are lots of tutorials on layering pillows if you need help online. Take a look and see what you think!

Make Lighting More Tasteful

One thing that doesn’t flatter the atmosphere in a basement at all is the lighting. Having bare bulbs hanging from the ceiling doesn’t look great. Add light coverings, if possible, but consider adding some of your own sources of lighting too. Add nice lamps, and even some fairy lights if you want to create a chilled out vibe. Fairy lights can add a magical feel to even the darkest of places.

Get a Dehumidifier

One of the biggest problems in a basement is the fact that they can be a little damp and funny smelling at times. There isn’t all that much you can do about this. After all, it’s due to the place of the room, and you can’t change that. You can however, get a basement dehumidifier. This should help to take a lot of the moisture out of the room, and get rid of any funny smells associated with the damp. It should instantly feel like a nicer place to be.

Paint the Ceiling and Walls

A lick of paint can solve almost anything, so take the time to paint the ceiling and walls. By painting the ceiling and walls the same colour, you can make the basement look larger to the naked eye. You should always go for lighter colours, as these give a brighter, larger effect. Painting your basement dark colours will give a more ‘cave-like’ appearance, which you definitely don’t want.

Use these tips and you’re bound to feel like your basement is a nicer place to be. Once you’ve brightened it up, added some homely elements and gotten rid of the damp, you’ll love it!
