Now that the summer is here, it’s so nice having a garden for the kids to play in. Unfortunately, not all our gardens are safe enough to leave the children unattended. Or, there’s nothing there to inspire them to go outside and play. You need to create yourself a family friendly backyard! It doesn’t have to take weeks of landscaping and thousands of dollars. There are some quick and easy ways to create the family friendly garden of your dreams.
A Quick Spruce Up
The first thing you’re going to want to do is give it a quick spruce up. This means mowing the lawn, getting rid of any trash, and pulling out the weeds. Depending on how big your garden is, this could take just 20 minutes. You could even rope in the family to help you out. Turn it into a fun game and watch how keen your kids are to get involved! You want to create a blank canvas to work with. That’s when you can start adding in flowers, plants, and other garden must-haves.
A Play Zone
Now that you have a clean garden, it’s time to create somewhere for the children to play. You don’t need to fork out for expensive garden toys if you don’t have the budget. There are plenty of ways to create play zones in the back yard. You could put out a plastic table and chairs. Complete with arts and crafts materials. Maybe get them to paint some plant pots for new flowers? You could chalk out a giant snakes and ladders board on the paving. Maybe a hopscotch area? There are so many different ways of creating a garden play zone that doesn’t take up too much time. Or money.
Family Safety
You’re going to want to consider how safe your garden is for the family, on top of everything else. Ideally, you want somewhere that’s private and free from any hazards. Another way of getting your children to play outside more is to turn your garden into a haven for wildlife. This can be as simple as putting up a bird feeder and providing your kids with some binoculars. Get them to make a note of all the different species they’ve seen in the backyard. Certain types of flowers and plants will also attract other wildlife to make their home in your garden.
These quick and simple tips will help turn that garden into something far more family friendly. Which means your children can enjoy time outside during the summer. That surely beats sitting in playing computer games all day!
