How I Made My Garden Safer For The Kids

I had always worried about the safety of my children when I leave them outside in the garden. We live in a crime-free neighborhood, but I still felt a little concerned. That’s why I decided to make some improvements last year that put my mind at ease. I’m going to take you through my process today in the hope of helping you to achieve the same goal. At the end of the day, we can’t watch our kids 24/7, and so it’s wise to take some extra precautions. Your garden might seem like a safe place for them to play, but there are hidden dangers around every corner.

Erecting a new fence

Our fence had surrounded the garden since before we purchased the property. So, it was worn-out and broken in some places. That meant it was easy for my kids to escape and go exploring. With some basic online research, I found a local firm that could undertake the job and make our garden more secure. Professionals at the All American Fence Company say that high-quality wood is the best option. I happen to agree, and that’s why we decided to avoid the metal and vinyl alternatives that have become so popular these days.

Placing a cover over our pond

One of my primary concerns was that one of the children would fall into our garden pond. We installed the feature a couple of years ago because we wanted to add some wildlife to the backyard. The fish alone cost a few hundred dollars, and so we wanted to keep them safe too. Thankfully, I found pond-covering products online that work. These days, I just make sure that I place the covers over the area whenever I leave my kids outside.

Removing poisonous plants

When we first moved into our home, I noticed some berries growing in the garden. At first, we left them alone thinking they added a much-needed element of color. However, I soon discovered the berries were poisonous, and so I had to make changes. No matter how many times you tell a child not to eat the fruits, you can guarantee they will do it. The last thing I wanted was to take my kids to the hospital for that reason. So, my partner decided to remove the shrub and take our garden back. We’ve still got some incredible colors outside because he planted some gorgeous flowers in its place.

On top of everything else, I installed some cheap CCTV cameras and linked them to a TV screen in our kitchen. It might seem like a drastic move, but it allows me to keep an eye on them while I’m cooking. You should do the same thing if you still have concerns about their safety. It’s much easier to ensure they have a good time if you can see possible accidents before they occur. I just lean out of the kitchen window and tell them to stop what they’re doing whenever they are headed for disaster. So far, that technique seems to work well.
