Cover up any drafts

Temperatures start to get a little lower at this time of year, and you’ll feel it if there’s a draft in your home. Spend time checking all of your doors and windows for any sign of a draft and repair any cracks or damage you find. There’s no point heating your home if the heat is just going to escape outside!

Book a roof inspection

Big storms and strong winds can wreak havoc on your roof, and any damage could put your home at risk of flooding. Book an inspection with a roofer to have someone come out and take a look at yours. Any lose tiling or clogged gutters should be dealt with immediately, as these are likely to cause problems for you later in the year.

Clear the gutters

Your gutters can quickly fill with all kinds of debris from nesting birds, falling leaves, etc. and leaving them this way could cause some problems with your plumbing and leave your home facing damage during the winter. Get up there and take care of it, or hire a professional to come in and do it for you. It’s a task which many people hate, but it will save you a lot of grief in the long run.

Make sure your heating is in order

A problem with your heating can cause misery in the winter months, along with a long wait to get it fixed. By tackling any heating issues now, you’ll be able to get them repaired in plenty of time so that it won’t affect you when winter really comes. Look out for problems with the heating system and your hot water output and book someone in to repair them.

Secure your fencing

The tough weather can also cause damage to your backyard fencing, something that leaves your home susceptible to burglaries as well as unwanted visitors. Take steps to burglar-proof your backyard by fixing any broken fence panels, filling in gaps and making sure all entrances are properly secured. You might believe the possibility of a burglary is low, but you never know who might take the opportunity to look out for big-ticket items nearer the holidays.

While this time of year is great for getting ready for the holidays and enjoying quality time with friends and family, you don’t want to neglect work around your home. Take care of the essential maintenance to keep your home in good shape this season so that you can have a chilled, stress-free winter.
