Give Your House a Holiday While You Search Out Some Sun

OK, it’s time to admit it, this summer is not shaping up the way it should. And with ‘arctic conditions’ forecast for June, most of us are going to have to get on a plane to find some well earned sun.

But while you are sorting out your passport and your luggage allowance for your trip, spare a few minutes for your house and ensure that it is just as prepared for when you go away as you are.

1. Security

Whenever you leave your home, make sure that your house is as secure as possible. Do not leave any valuables on show and make your home look as ‘lived in’ as you can.

Try to arrange for a neighbour to come in to close your curtains and pick up any post. She could also give the place a quick once over to make sure everything is ok.

Try to use timers on lights so that it looks like someone is in and lock all doors and windows to be extra secure.

2. Heating

When you are going away in the summer it is not necessary to leave your heating on all the time as the risk of frozen pipes is minimal.

However if you do feel there is going to be a cold spell, and you are concerned about frost, then turn the thermostat down and leave the heating running all the time. This will keep your house free from damp and considerably reduce the risk of a problem.

3. Electricity

It is wise to turn off as many electric appliances as you can before you go not only at the wall but also by removing the plugs from the sockets. There are some appliances that will need to be left on, but keep this to a minimum to reduce the chance of any problems.

4. Water

To reduce the chances of a water damage, turn off the water at the mains before you go. That way, if there are any issues with washers or weak pipes, there will be no nasty surprises when you come back.

Though you may think this is a step too far, it is amazing how many people return from their holidays to find that the swimming pool they longed for in their hotel isn’t so welcome when it’s in the front room.

5. Social Networking

As the likes of Facebook, Twitter and the family of networking sites become much more accessible, make sure you are not unintentionally inviting attention when you are away.

There will be enough time to show off your holiday snaps when you return, so make sure you and your children don’t broadcast to the world that your house is going to be empty. And remember to turn off location ‘check ins’ before you arrive at the airport, otherwise everyone will know that your house is vulnerable.

Take a few quick steps and your house can be as secure as possible when you are away, so that you can have a fun and carefree holiday.
