If you’ve noticed that your home could do with a little improving – not to worry. The idea always seems a lot worse than the actual job itself. Believe it or not, you can do a lot of tasks yourself as long as you have the right tools for the job. So before you start freaking out about not having enough money or time – figure out exactly what needs to be done first.
Your home will give you hints as to what a problem is. Repair structural problems
Before you begin to think about improvements that are cosmetic – meaning redecorating and remodelling your kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom – you need to focus on the structure of your home. This means things like rising damp, bowing walls, insect infestation, cracked walls, unstable chimney, and collapsed floors. You will need professionals to fix these kinds of problems, and they can tend to be rather pricey. But having said that, they will add value to your home once sorted, so it’s definitely worth it in the long run.
Add central heating
Most houses will have central heating, unless of course the home that you bought is very old, and is yet to have this feature installed. Now while you may not need this during the summer, it is a good idea to get it sorted now so that when the winter does come, you’re all ready to go. Another way you can ensure you keep your homes warm on the cooler days is by sealing any drafts around windows and doors. You should also move anything that you have blocking any radiators, as this would be a total waste because whatever you have that is obstructing the heat will just absorb it all.
Sort all superficial defects
Now, these things aren’t major issues that need to be dealt with immediately, but they can really start to bug you each time you see the problem, and your home deserves to look it’s best. Fortunately, these kind of things can be sorted out yourself and are very simple. They include sticking doors, loose doorknobs, peeling paint, leaky taps, floor stains, lifted flooring, and cracks in the plasterwork. If you aren’t quite sure what you need to do – the internet will be your best friend. Or even the friendly member of staff in the hardware store.
So take a walk all around your house, inside and out, and see what you think could do with a little bit of extra love. It will all be worth it in the end, especially when the value of your home goes up.
