Easy Eco-Friendly Home Decor

You might remember that back in August I shared a post about how my partner and I had been working hard to make our home more eco-friendly. Since we have finished making the initial updates, I thought I would share some tips for green decorating.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that green home decor will affect your home’s comfort and style, because that’s not the case. Believe it or not, eco-friendly home design focuses not only on making your house as green as possible. It also focuses on creating a sanctuary for you and your family to relax and unwind in.

To help you create a home that’s environmentally-friendly, as well as stylish, I have put together a few handy ideas, here:

Opt for eco paints

Many of us don’t realize it, but the products we use around our homes, like paint, can have a big impact on the environment. If you want to create a home that’s as environmentally-friendly as possible, opt for eco-friendly paints.

The greenest paints tend to be clay or milk-based ones, as these contain a small amount of chemicals. Due to the lower amount of chemicals in these paints, the gases released from them as they dry, are less damaging to the environment. They are also better for yours and your family’s health.

Reuse old furniture

When we redecorate our homes, many of us get rid of our old furniture and buy brand new pieces. However, that is incredibly wasteful, as well as harmful to the environment. Instead of throwing old furniture away, take the time to give it a new lease of life.

You would be amazed at how much of a difference adding a coat of paint or varnish to an old piece of furniture can make. Just make sure that the paint or varnish that you use to revamp your old furniture is low in chemicals.

Buy green

If you have to buy new furniture, make sure to opt for FSC sustainable furniture. By choosing pieces from a green company, you can ensure that your furniture has not damaged the environment.

Have a look online, and you should be able to find plenty of companies selling green furniture. When choosing a company to buy from, make sure to double check that the pieces on offer are sustainably made.

Make accessories

Instead of buying accessories for your home, get creative and make them yourself. You might be thinking that making your own accessories might be tricky, especially if you want pieces that are well-designed.

However, it’s actually much easier than you would think to design your own accessories. Well, as long as you have a creative streak, that is. Take inspiration from online design sites, like Pinterest, to get ideas for DIY projects. Things like lampshades, coffee coasters, cushion covers, and throws are surprisingly easy to make.

There are plenty of other things that you can do to make your home decor more eco-friendly. However, these are just a few ideas to help get you started.
