DIY Hacks To Make Your Home Warmer This Winter

Keeping your home warm, especially during the winter months, is incredibly important. It means that you can have a good night’s sleep and won’t be woken up by chattering teeth! Additionally, it can help fight seasonal illnesses such as the cold or the flu and keep any outdoor chills away from your home.

If you don’t put the proper steps in place to keep your home warm, you’ll soon suffer the consequences. For once, it will definitely be harder to get out of bed on a cold, dark morning!

With that in mind, here are some simple DIY hacks that you can use to keep your home warm this winter!

Buy Draught Excluders.

Sometimes, your home could feel cold as a slight draught makes its way through the house, particularly under doors. One way in which you can combat this is by laying draught excluders in front of the doors. Draught excluders are strips of foam, rubber, or metal that help block any gaps between the door and the floor, therefore trapping any warm air inside. There are plenty of designs to choose from online – including bright, fun styles that are perfect for kid’s bedrooms!

Another way in which you can keep your home warmer is ensuring that you keep doors closed throughout the day. Additionally, pay attention to areas of your home where you feel a slight draught and determine the cause. For example, you may notice that your kitchen is freezing because you installed a cat flap.

Install Thick Curtains.

Thick curtains are another great way to keep your home warmer and are especially useful in the bedroom. Additionally, they can be a great way to add a splash of color to an otherwise bare room. You’d be surprised about how much a pair of curtains can transform a space.

Thankfully, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to install them either – you can do it yourself! There are plenty of guides online that teach you how to DIY curtains – taking you through the process of designing them, alongside putting them up!

Insulate your home.

Another way in which you can stay warm this winter is by ensuring your home is adequately insulated. This can be achieved by applying spray foam insulation. In addition to keeping your home warmer, this form of insulation can also provide protection from mold and moisture and can help with noise reduction. However, when using spray insulation yourself, you need to be careful. It contains many chemicals, and if you do not proceed with caution, you could make yourself sick very quickly. Therefore, when applying spray insulation, you must ensure that:

  • You pay attention to the spray foam temperature range. Ensure that the space is neither too warm nor too cold, as this can affect the spray itself. For example, it might not be as effective.
  • You wear appropriate PPE when installing the foam. (Mask, goggles, etc.)
  • You give the foam plenty of time to dry before using the space.
  • You dispose of any leftover foam and the canister safely.
