Decorating Your Kitchen

If your kitchen is in need of a new lease of life, then you might want to consider
decorating it.  Decorating a kitchen can give rise to a number of challenges, however, compared to other rooms in the home, so if you want to make sure you get it right, read on for some handy tips.

Planning and preparation

As with any DIY task, you need to plan ahead and get the preparation well underway
before you can even begin decorating. Get this bit right, and your job will be a whole lot easier.  Decide which areas of the kitchen you want to decorate.  Is it just one or two walls,
all the walls, tiling above certain places, and what about the ceiling?  If you just decide to do a small area, then make sure it won’t show up the rest of the kitchen, as often happens when you start decorating.

Make sure the area you want to decorate is clean and blemish-free.  Cover up any holes or cracks with filler.  You may need to move appliances to get to the walls or areas you want to decorate, so make sure you have help in doing this, otherwise you might risk an injury in the process.

Paints and colours

The fun bit of any decorating task has to be choosing the colour schemes.  You can buy special kitchen paints, which are durable and can cope with the steam and grease that are often emitted from cooking.

Consider which colours will work well with your appliances, worktops or tiling.  Look at colours that have longevity.  For example, if you are considering replacing an aged appliance with a new silver Zanussi, Indesit or Neff one some time in the future, then bear this in mind when it comes to colour combinations.  Similarly, if you’re considering having a re-vamp with fixtures and fittings and you’ve spotted Omega, Prima or Maia Worktops in stylish colours, then again, see how this will match up with any decorating work you intend to do.

As with any painting job, make sure you test the colour by buying sample pots first, before you commit to buying a whole tin. Measure the area you’ll be decorating so you’ll get an idea of how many tins of paint you’ll need.

Wallpapering

Wallpapering a kitchen has come back into fashion in recent times, thanks to an evolution of inspiring new designs.  Wallpapering is quite a different task from painting, and requires a different set of skills.  You’ll need to be thoroughly methodical with your measuring and cutting, and precise in getting it right.  The end results can look really refreshing though, so if it’s something you’d like to try, then check out the wide range of designs currently available.

Retiling

Many kitchens have tiled areas, so it’s worth giving tiling a mention when it comes to talking about kitchen decorating.  If you want to re-tile an area, then you’ll need to remove all the old tiles first.  Tiling also takes a bit of skill, and if it’s not something you’ve done before, then it’s worth asking someone who knows how or consulting a decent DIY manual.  You’ll need similar skills to wallpapering, in that you’ll need to be methodical and precise with measuring and cutting, to ensure a perfect job.  Having patience is also a vital skill for this type of task.
