Choosing the Best Dog Breed For Your Situation: Three Breeds to Consider

So you have decided to get a pet. Whether you are adopting or getting from a puppy, there are a variety of breeds that you could choose from. You might have always wanted a certain breed, but will it actually work well for you and your family situation? All dogs have some similarities. But then each breed can vary quite a lot. Some dogs need to be active a lot, which wouldn’t work if you work long hours or are elderly. Dogs that don’t need to be walked as much might be a better choice for you. So who do you know which breed is best? Here are a few different breeds and their characteristics. Hopefully you’ll be able to find one that works for you.

Dachshunds

Dachshunds are hound dogs that use their sense of smell a lot. In the past they will have been bred to hunt for various different animals. These days, they are a really versatile pet that works well for families and even show dogs. They are dogs that do particularly well with children as they are one of the most playful dogs breeds. They will travel well with you, but they don’t enjoy the cold. They can be suitable for a single person too. They become very attached and want a lot of attention. So you’d just need to think if you can offer all that attention to your pet. Dachshunds are rather prone to barking, due to their predatory nature. So if you lived in an apartment block or have small babies, they might not be the best choice for you. They aren’t good with strangers or other dogs, though. So if you already had a pet dog, they might not be the best option for you. You could read a little more in depth on a buying guide for Dachshund dogs, to see if they will work for you.

French Bulldog

Bulldogs have a bit of a unique appeal. Other breeds of dog may be considered more aesthetically pleasing. However, bulldogs are one of the best dogs for companionship around. French bulldogs, as you might imagine are small but strong. Their coat is short which makes it simple and easy to care for. They can work well in families as they do like to play. Equally, they do enjoy relaxing and chilling out. So if you need a fairly low maintenance dog, a French Bulldog could be the one for you. If one of the reasons you would like a dog is for safety and security, then they make an excellent choice. They aren’t the kind of dog that would just bark at anything, unlike a Dachshund mentioned above. So if they bark, you know something would be happening, or someone would be approaching. Having said that, they don’t much space to keep them happy. So could be a good option if your home is small or you live in an apartment block.

Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular dogs to have as a pet. It isn’t too hard to see why either. They are intelligent, beautiful and loyal dogs. They are extremely playful and can act like a puppy well into their older years. So that is certainly something to bear in mind. You might find the puppy-like traits endearing or completely annoying. Golden Retrievers need a lot of exercise each day. They need daily walks as well as general play. Having time out in the yard is important too. They are one of the breeds of dog that are happy to go in water and have a swim in a lake, for example. So they aren’t really a breed you can consider if you just don’t have the space for them.

They like to have ‘work’ to do, like fetching a ball or getting paper for you. They are incredibly friendly, so as a result, do not make good watchdogs. They are unlikely to bark if a stranger is around. They are more likely to go up to them and want to be played with! So if having a dog for security is something that you want, they wouldn’t be the best option. Golden Retrievers are also quite clingy. They want to be in the house with you all of the time. So if you want a dog that will go in a kennel outside, these wouldn’t be your best choice. All just different things to think about while you decide what dog will work best for you.
