Can You Handle A Dog?

So many people think of getting a dog and absolutely love the idea. But once they’ve got a dog, they realise it’s not all cuddles and cute pictures, and the animal that they have bought or adopted actually needs caring for more than they think. This leads to a lot of dogs being given up and put in for adoption. This can mess a dog around so much, just as it would a human. They grow emotionally attached to humans just as much as we do. So the question you need to ask yourself is this, can you handle a dog? Well, if after reading this article you think you can’t, hold off getting one until you definitely can!

The Attention

Dogs need a lot of attention, more than humans probably ever would. A lot of dogs unfortunately spend hours a day on their own, when all they want is some company. If this sounds like how you would have to be, you’re going to be more proactive with spending time with them. Make sure you’re always taking them on nice long walks to get them out in the fresh air. Always try and train your dog to be let off the lead as well so they can do plenty of exploring. If you’re worried about them running off, grab a glow in the dark colour from companies such as coolstuffshub so it’s harder to lose them. Unfortunately, so many different dogs go missing each year due to running off when on the lead, and only a fraction of them are found. A glow in the dark collar will allow you to keep your eye on them wherever they run to. When in the home, make sure you’re always giving them cuddles and fuss to keep them entertained, as well as to help your bond grow with them.

The Cost

The cost of owning a dog is actually huge. Right from the beginning, you’re going to be spending probably hundreds on the different thing a dog might require. First of all you’ve got food, which you will most definitely be needing a lot of. Bigger dogs in particular eat a lot, but don’t underestimate the size of a smaller dog, they will still get through a lot! The best thing you can do to try and save a bit of money is shop online. Another cost that you need to think about is the cost of grooming, buying new toys, and training classes etc. Dogs are usually more expensive in the beginning due to the various different things you’ll have to buy, but the costs do continue throughout ownership of a dog, and they definitely don’t dip much over the years. If you have a dog that can be a bit of a nightmare in the home, you’re going to have to consider the cost of repairs. A lot of dogs are able to tear carpets up, chew through sofas, and rip curtains from the rails whilst you’re out, purely because they’re anxious. If this is happening to you, training is needed right away to try and halt the problem!
