Buried Under Boxes: The Best Ways To Pack When You’re Moving House

One of the most stressful and frustrating things about moving house can be the packing itself. You’d think it’d be the simplest thing in the world right? Just keep putting stuff in boxes until the house is empty! Well, in an ideal world it would be that easy. But, of course, we don’t live in a perfect world. We live in the real world. Having to take your entire life and shove it into a series of boxes always ends up being way more of a challenge than you expect.  Fortunately, there are a lot of very simple things that you can do to make packing up, ready for the big move much easier and far less stressful.

Get the right boxes

Boxes might seem like the simplest possible part of moving. But it’s amazing how many people end up making life more difficult for themselves by choosing the wrong materials for packing. Don’t think that any old cardboard box will do. Dedicated moving cartons will often be specially designed to be extra thick for added strength. And please make sure that your boxes are taped up securely! The last thing you want is to reach your new house only to have all your precious china smash on the pavement outside when it falls out of the box.

Padding!

Your boxes will get jostled and knocked around, there’s no avoiding it. If you want to avoid things getting broken in transit then you’ve got to make sure your boxes are properly padded. This can actually be done really easily. If you’ve got sheets, blankets and pillows you need to pack, use them as padding for more delicate items. That way you kill two birds with one stone! If you don’t have any spare cushions, scrunched up paper works just as well. Make sure that the box is packed tight so that things don’t shift around too much.

Are you doing it all yourself?

You might be tempted to get all the packing done on your own. That way you can be sure where everything is and it’s packed exactly how you want it. But remember that moving services are trained professionals who probably have a better idea of the correct way to pack up a box than you do. Think about your most fragile items, you might want to just have the moving company pack them up for you and take care of the easier stuff yourself.

Get started early

The worst thing you can do is to leave your packing until the very last minute. You really don’t want to spend the last few days before the move running around, desperately throwing things in boxes. Give yourself plenty of time so that you can take your time over it. That way you’ll not only avoid stress, but you’ll end up with a much better idea of where everything is when you reach the other side.
