Winter is always a harsh and unforgiving season for our plants and animals. Making sure that the garden is kept tidy during the winter is all you can really do, because pruning plants can expose them to winter weather and kill them off. This is why when February and March finally come round, it can be an exciting time for gardener’s all over the world. Once the weather starts to look up, we can get back out there and make some of those essential preparations for the spring. Here are some of the things you can do to make your garden come back to life during the start of spring.

Mow the lawn

The easiest job you can start off with at the end of the winter is to give the lawn a well needed trim and make sure it is in tip top condition for the spring. This will also include getting rid of any fallen leaves and moss which may have accumulated during the colder, wetter months. Make sure to wait for a dry day before you mow the lawn, and also make sure that you trim the borders to keep it tidy!

Trim The Trees

Over the winter period, any trees you have had in the garden will have died back for a few months and gone into a dormant phase. If you have been thinking of chopping down any of the trees in your garden, this is the ideal time of year to do it. Once spring has sprung and the leaves grow back, birds and small animals will find homes in your tree and cutting them down could harm them. Make sure to call the professionals such as Happy’s Tree Service to come and cut down any trees and trim the rest to make sure they grow strong during the next season.

Plant Simple Seeds

Once spring is on its way, we start to get tired of seeing nothing but green and brown in the garden and we hope for a burst of colour in the space.  There are a lot of really gorgeous flowers which bloom during early spring and a lot of these can be easily planted by sprinkling seeds onto compost in later March. Flowers such as Sweet Pea, Larkspur, and Forget Me Not are ideal for planting early on and they will bring some stunning shades of blue and pink to the garden in April and May.

Lay Down Mulch

Mulch is something which you need to have in your garden to keep the soil moist, nutrient rich and to help plants grow big and strong. Whenever you place old bits of vegetables, fruit and plant matter into your compost you are producing next year’s mulch. Now is the ideal time for you to dig into your compost bin and spread out some of the mulch onto plant beds before seeds start to sprout. The addition of mulch will see a much strong growth season for your garden and it will really show some impressive effects.

Plant Vegetables

Vegetables and fruit are a big part of our diet and if you have never grown them yourself before, now is the time to give it a try. There are loads of vegetables which you can plant now which will start to grow and develop during the spring such as spinach, lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes and also things like carrots and potatoes. Get planting and see what food items you can grow; you’ll notice a huge difference in the freshness and taste by growing your own.
