As is the case when working with any power tool, it’s vital that you operate a chainsaw safely, as well as wear all the appropriate protective gear. The last thing you want is to injure yourself (or others) as you go about completing whatever task is at hand. Of course, it goes without saying that you should only use high quality chainsaws – such as STIHL chain saws . But even then, you’ll still need to know how to operate it safely. If you’re a little nervous about using a chainsaw, and would like to know the basics about operating it safely, read on. Here are 5 safety tips for operating a chainsaw.

1. Start the chainsaw carefully

Before starting up your chainsaw, make sure there’s no loose debris on the tool, and make sure the guide bar is not in contact with anything. Also hold the chainsaw firmly when starting it up, and make sure there is a good distance between yourself and other people or objects in your area.

2. Wear the right clothing

When operating heavy-duty power tools such as the chainsaw, it’s important you dress for the occasion. In this context, this means you should avoid wearing loose clothing (but not too tight either), and steel-capped boots. It’s also a great idea to wear a hard hat, especially if you’re cutting down a tree or removing unwanted branches. Last but not least, wear some protective gloves (to prevent cuts and burns) and don’t forget those safety goggles.

3. Be familiar with all the controls

Before you even consider turning on your chainsaw, take some time out and get familiar with all the buttons and controls on the tool you’ll be working with. Especially, be familiar with the cut-off switch in case of an emergency. At the very least, read the instruction manual that came with the chainsaw: you’ll find lots of useful safety information contained inside, and that information may just save your life (or limb) one day.

4. Never use a chainsaw alone

Sure, you may be tempted to go at it alone and do whatever needs to be done around your home or backyard, but take a step back for a moment. What happens if there’s an accident and you’re all alone? No one will be able to help you, obviously, and this can be potentially fatal for you. Always work with at least one other person, and be mindful of where they are when you’re working.

5. Avoid cutting with the tip of the saw

Unfortunately, too many people are injured each year because they fail to abide by this safety tip. Cutting with the tip of a chainsaw can sometimes result in kickback, which occurs when the tip of the saw hits a solid object (such as wood) at the wrong angle. When this occurs, the saw will automatically push back off the object, and sometimes this can result in a bodily injury. Always – repeat, always – cut with the body of the saw. It makes for a better and safer cut.

There are a number of safety tips to be aware of when operating a chainsaw. If you don’t have much experience operating one, then it’s vital you familiarise yourself with them before you even start a chainsaw up. And even if you’re an expert, it doesn’t hurt to have a quick refresher. At the end of the day, chainsaws can be deadly, and knowing how to operate one safely can save your life one day.
