Traditionally, the man often proposes to the woman. Yet more and more women are bending traditions in this day and age in which gender norms are shifting and same-sex marriages are legal and embraced. In the past, women could propose, but only February 29th on a leap year which annoyingly comes once every 4 years. Thankfully, these traditions aren’t so set in stone anymore and millions of women over the world have embraced the special moment of popping the question. After all, why should you wait for them to propose to you? Nervous? Here are some tips on popping the question.

It’s completely normal to feel nervous when you’re thinking of popping the question, especially if those around you – including your partner – come from a background of previous traditions. However, if you love each other, and you feel like you and your partner are in a place to get married, then you should just go for it! You don’t necessarily have to wait for a special moment, or wait until you’re sure they’ll say yes. The chances are, they feel exactly the same way about you and want to spend the rest of their lives with you.
Your token of love
When a man proposes to a woman, she is often presented with an engagement ring. However, if you’re planning on proposing to a man, you might want to think of something else to show your token of love. Pick something they can keep for a long time such as an engraved watch.
If you’re in a lesbian relationship, it’s still pretty standard to buy an engagement ring for your girlfriend should you wish. Then, when you’re married, you can both wear wedding rings for women as a symbol of your eternal love and commitment.
Create a special moment
The day you get engaged should be one of the happiest days of your life, alongside your actual wedding day. The moment of proposal is often one that people want to remember for the rest of their lives, so why not go all out and make it special? You could take them to their favourite restaurant, or the place you met, or even away on an incredible vacation to propose to them at sunset. Whatever you decide to use, they will love the fact you’ve put some extra thought into making that moment as special as possible.

Finally, proposing – especially as a woman – is a massive thing to get your head around. It’s normal to have those daunting thoughts imagining the worst case scenarios, but you shouldn’t doubt yourself! If you’re really sure how your partner feels about you and vice versa, then you should feel confident in displaying your love to them with the promise to get married.
